Google Shopping Express aimed to be a convenient alternative to the constant ritual of making shopping lists and going to the store. It was a delivery service that let you shop from local stores in one convenient website, then have everything delivered right to your door. I was the senior design lead on this year-long project, which helped launch this ambitious product.

Illustration

At the time of this project, Google was making strides toward making flat illustration a core part of its visual language, so we were immediately drawn to it as a way to help tell the story of the experience. We spent countless hours creating illustrations representing every shopping category the product supported, as well as larger hero illustrations to help communicate its value.

Product Design

I worked closely with internal teams at Google to develop the user experience and product features. Being an external vendor came with its own set of challenges. An ever-changing product scope made it difficult to pin down the target, and internal teams were often myopically focused on function and features over brand experience, which is essential for online shopping.

The Result

I helped create one of the first digital shopping and delivery experiences out there. It was easy to use, richly branded, and ahead of its time. The program has since been shuttered, but its impact can still be seen in our daily lives.
